Since it began in 1980, the Charleston Conference has grown from 20 participants in 1980 to over 1,600 in 2014. Scholarship applicants must reside in the United States or Canada, and currently be employed as a librarian or para-professional. The application consists of providing one professional recommendation, a curriculum vitae and a short essay that describes what the applicants library will be like in five years.
